Obesity in Dogs and Cats

We monitor our health and what we eat to an extent. Why would we not do the same for our dogs? 59% of dogs in the United States are considered obese. Outside of daily exercise and making sure we are monitoring how much food they eat, what should we consider when feeding our overweight dogs? To start, portion size should be based on ideal body weight which can be found out during a consult with a veterinarian. As dog owners we should focus on high protein, high fiber, lower calorie density, and making sure to limit treats. Obesity can lead to early arthritis in joints, fatty liver disease, fatigue, and heart disease.

At Mighty Bites, our proteins are all 96% lean and 5% fat making them all healthy options for an overweight dog. We recommend using our pucks as toppers to dry kibble, but we can also recommend them as a treat! Cooking the patty and then slicing it up to take with you and your fur baby on walk is a great way to train them and keep them highly motivated with a high value treat. The proteins we would recommend reaching for would be the Venison as it is high in protein and highly palatable but also great for their hearts. We would also recommend the Rabbit as it is a lean protein. Now as always remain patient as your fur baby goes through their weight loss journey and be as consistent as possible.
